Faculty Advisor

Every student admitted to the Institute is assigned a faculty advisor who assists the student in the induction process and monitors the student's progress during his/her tenure at the Institute. Students are advised to discuss their problems and difficulties with their respective faculty advisors.
Role as a faculty advisor

At Silicon a group of around 30 students are attached to a teacher. The teacher is the advisor to them in all their activities and difficulties during their stay at Silicon. In the first year faculty members mostly from the Department of BSH are given these responsibilities. From second year onwards the group is attached to a fixed teacher of the branch for the next 6 semesters.
The role of faculty advisors is to know and guide the students attached to them at a personal level. This can be done through
1. Knowing the students personal record i.e. their academic record, extracurricular activities, hobbies etc.
2. Knowing the names, address and occupation, of their parents and socioeconomic background of their families.
3. Having regular contact through meetings, gathering to understand their problems and difficulties.
4. To have contact with their parents telephonically and/or arranging meeting with them.
5. Organising group activities.
6. To help the students to come out of their difficulties with the help of other faculty and staff members

A faculty advisor should plan the following specific activities.
7.Specify some time in their timetable so that the students of their group can meet them. Also make it a point to call a meeting of all students once a month.
8.The faculty advisor must analyse the results of all the students of the group at the end of every semester. They must congratulate the students having good SGPA/CGPA (8.5 or more) and should call their parents also congratulate them. They must counsel the students having failures. Particularly the parents of those students who have more than two back papers must be called to the Institute and the matter may be discussed with them to find out some solution for the improvement of the student. They should take the help of the “Personality Development Cell” in this regard. Also the faculty advisors must identify the reasons of a failure in laboratory subject (if any).
9.During a semester they must collect the attendance report of the students either directly from the teachers or from the Attendance Monitoring Committee and talk to the defaulters and their parents.
a)They must visit the Silicon Residence at least twice in a semester and meet the students of their group. This is required as these students are staying away from home.
b)They should organize get together of their group once in a semester to have a better interaction. Expenditure up to a maximum of Rs500/- per get together may be reimbursed. One of the get together may be planned slightly away from the Institute on a working Saturday. They can use the Institute transport facility by paying the fuel cost from the expenditure sanctioned for a trip not more than 50 kilometers (to and fro). The entire program should be completed within 4 hours.
c)Time to time they should call the parents of their wards (at least two to three times a semester). The expenditure in this regard also can be reimbursed.
A report on the activities conducted must be maintained by the concerned faculty member and should be submitted along with the annual self-appraisal report.
