Facilities@Silicon

Infrastructure
Silicon is Odisha’s premier centre for technological education with an established track record over the last decade. We are constantly changing to adapt to the needs of students by accepting innovations and embracing modern technology and techniques. Our endeavour has been to make “success” a habit with our students - while entering the corporate world or pursuing higher studies.
Team Silicon is determined to build a complete Institute that would move beyond teaching with creative leadership and a culture of teamwork. We have opened our second residential campus at Sambalpur, Odisha with the core engineering subjects while our campus at Bhubaneswar offers circuit engineering subjects. Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, is situated near Infocity, Patia. It is adjacent to the Sikhar Chandi Temple and TCS Development Centre. Silicon Hills, the campus at Bhubaneswar is developed on 18.65 acres of land.
Both the campuses are strategically located at places where industrial growth has taken a front seat. They are well connected and Bhubaneswar is emerging as an ideal software city and Jharsuguda (35 kms from Sambalpur) as industrial city.

Academics
Academics at Silicon is based on a value based approach and is driven by a group of enthusiastic and highly qualified and highly motivated faculty members who teach beyond the curriculum, provide motivation for research and higher education. Academics at Silicon enable corporate readiness in education and training - all of which takes a personalized approach. The right balance of years of experience with young vigour ensures special and personalized attention and builds the ability to meet special challenges as students move into the fast paced life after college. Silicon has in place a balanced curriculum by integrating state-of-the-art infrastructure with competent human resources and high quality pedagogy.
We take that extra mile to provide students with an opportunity to combine career advancement with professionalism and all-round personality development.
Our academic curriculum is based on a learner-centric approach. The teacher plays the role of a guide, counsellor, mentor, and facilitator. Focused and need based personalized coaching, continuous adoption of modern techniques in learning, special education programmes and extension schools are some of the cornerstones of Silicon’s academia. Teaching inputs are regularly updated keeping in mind contemporary developments. Students’ needs are continuously evaluated through dynamic and regular feedback and monitoring. Class committees comprising the top fifteen students in the class, the concerned faculty and a senior teacher as the chair, help assess students’ need and overcome academic problems, if any. The committee meets as and when necessary during which students and teachers meet under the supervision of the presiding chair to discuss and address problems. Institutional feedback from the students is taken twice in an academic year to regulate and fine-tune the teaching approach.

Laboratories
Silicon has all the requisite laboratories for disciplines in such as Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology and Master of Computer Application . The department of AEI has Advanced VLSI lab, Analog Electronic Circuits lab, Programmable Logic Controller lab, Instrumentation lab; there are 11 laboratories in the department of Computer Science and Engineering, MCA and Information Technology including Software Engineering Lab, Computer Organization Lab, Object Oriented Programming and Database Lab, Data Structure and Algorithm Lab, Operating System and Computer Network Lab, Java and Internet & Web Technology Lab among others. The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has labs such as Network Device Lab, Electrical Machines Lab, Control System Engineering Lab, Power System Lab, Power Electronics Lab, Electrical and Electronics Measurement Lab, Skill Development Lab, Advance Simulation Lab, Microwave Engineering laboratory among others. The Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities has a well maintained and advanced Chemistry lab, Physics lab, Basic Mechanical lab, Basic Civil lab, Workshop, Engineering Drawing lab. All the laboratories in the college are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for effective learning. Apart from these, Silicon has a sophisticated English Language Laboratory where students are trained to develop appropriate communication skills. Silicon plans to put “Learning Online” with the Internet where students have access and the Internet round the clock. It advocates for an open system of education where focus is on “progressive learning”.

Library
Silicon has developed a culture where the library plays the most important role for the students. The Silicon Library is the centre of intellectual activities. It receives special attention and importance in the scheme of development of the Institute. It has well over 60,000 books and subscribes to many important national and international journals. The library remains open throughout the week with a few off hours. Students can issue books from the library under three schemes. They are (a) Regular issue, (b) Book Bank issue and (c) Overnight issue. In addition to these Silicon has formed a privileged group known as the Scholars’ Club. The members of the Scholars’ Club can issue additional books from the library depending on the availability. There is a reference section for faculty and students for internal reading. The total collection in the reference section is over 4,000. The library provides non-book materials like CDs, DVDs and e-journals as well and subscribes to more than 33 kinds of journals and 42 kinds of magazines. It subscribes to e-journals such as IEEE (ASPP + POP) and Elsevier (Science Direct) by which the members can access the e-journals from different fields of Social Sciences & Engineering. It has cubicles to sit 500 readers at a time.

Hostels
Silicon has three hostels which can accommodate 900 boys and 600 girls. Silicon Residences have an ideal environment for study. The boarders have certain advantages over the day scholars. The library and computer labs remain open till 10 p.m. for the boarders. Group study becomes an important benefit for the residents. A fully residential Silicon promises to enhance the all round development and receives complete involvement of the students. Students on campus engage in many extracurricular activities such as movie shows, heritage tours, dance festivals, performing art shows, debate competitions, quiz competitions, one minute to fame shows and much more. The placement results have shown that Silicon Residence helps students to compete well. Team spirit develops in the boarders in multiple ways which helps them get jobs and prepare for a successful social life.

Food Court
Boarders and day-scholars can avail a variety of nutritious and hygienic food from the canteen. There are two canteens – vegetarian and non-vegetarian – which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to Siliconites from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. round the year at a subsidized cost. A cafeteria caters to a mixture of tastes and provides ready to eat food, snacks, and meals to students.

SKY Lab
The Sky Lab is a Wi-Fi zone for students with seating arrangements around a picturesque fountain. Students use this facility for internet browsing with soothing background music matching the hour of the day. It has a sculpted, reflective roof to protect users from the sun and rain.

Auditorium
Silicon has an Auditorium with a seating capacity of 346, featuring a state-of-the-art audio-visual system for movie shows, theater performances, conferences and other such events. The Silicon Cine Club organizes weekly movies from diverse genres for students and employees of the Institute, in the Auditorium.

GATE Coaching
In order to motivate our students to go for further Higher Education in IITs/ NITs/ IIMs, jobs in PSUs, Indian Engineering Service (IES), we have been conducting Free GATE Preparatory Classes at Silicon through the Industry Interface Cell where Experienced GATE qualified resource persons from Silicon as well as visiting resource persons from industry and academics train students for this exam. These classes have been extremely successful and every year, around 10-15 students qualify for GATE within an AIR of 2500. We not only had the GATE topper in 2010, but many of our students score in the top 50s.

Pre-Placement Training
The Industry Interface Cell of Silicon functions as the body that connects the potential human resource at Silicon with the potential employers. It facilitates the processes of placement of students in the industry for training as well as employment. In addition, it career-counsels the students, prepares them for employment, advises them for higher education and runs special programmes for difficult learners. The II Cell arranges campus interviews of various organizations for the pre-final and final year B.Tech and MCA students for recruitment. Many guest lecturers of eminent personalities from the industry are also arranged for students for career counseling. Students hugely benefit from mock interviews, written tests & group discussions arranged for them prior to campus recruitments.

Entrepreneurship Development
The Silicon Entrepreneurship Development Cell was launched in March 2011, with a view to encourage students to consider self-employment as a career option, provide training in entrepreneurship through modular courses and increase the relevance of management particularly in the non-corporate and under-managed sectors. The role of small-scale industry and first generation entrepreneurs have grown extremely important in the present day to contribute significantly in the country's economic development. The main thrust of all the policies is on the development of the new entrepreneurs. Motivational inputs and the infrastructure of the support system occupy a significant position in equipping "the first generation entrepreneurs". The main focus of the cell is to develop entrepreneurial motivation, behavioural skill, competencies, and enterprise-management abilities among the students.

Student Activities The Silicon Students’ Council (SSC) is the highest student body of the Institute. It comprises Class Representatives (CR, of 2nd, 3rd and 4th years), Section Prefects (SP, of 1st year) and Secretary General (SG) from the 4th year. They conduct elections among the students from every branch and semester for the above mentioned positions. The SSC along with its team lead, Secretary General, is responsible for maintaining student discipline and looks into the smooth functioning of all student activities. The Silicon Campus Coordination Committee (CCC) is a student group that takes care of the on-campus hostel life of Silicon residents. They work towards making the campus life more jubilant and enjoyable. They organize cultural events, competitions among the campus residents and celebrate the hostel foundation day every year.
